In 2018, I had the opportunity to take part in a small team of unexperienced (in construction) individuals with whom we would build a CLT row house under the guidance of my father. What ensued were seven months of intense learning, working on everything from the reinforced concrete foundations to the assembly of the CLT construction, the placement of the windows and the laminated curtain facade, the installation of services, and more. This experience began to show me the great value of practical construction knowledge and a well integrated design process in the architectural profession and it has continued to be of considerable relevance throughout my architectural education and beyond. Furthermore, it inspires me to deepen and expand this knowledge by seeking out similar opportunities.


02.Shelves for sara

Two small and simple shelving units out of solid beech were designed and made to store and display a small but cherished book collection. They were made to be either used as seperate single pieces in a bedroom or as a central joined piece on the wall if a future situation allows for it. The beech is finished with two layers of tung oil and each unit is mounted with six stainless steel screws.

03.A glueless chair

As part of a minor, during the third year of my bachelor studies, an assignment was presented to design a piece of furniture, deriving inspiration from the vast chair collection of the Architecture faculty in Delft. Both the rather unconventional demountable nature of the ‘stick chair 020’ by Bruno Ninaber van Eyben (for Artifort) and the refined aesthetics, beautifully efficient material use and attention to ergonomics of the Superleggera by Gio Ponti served as starting points in the design process. 

Additionally, a personal affection for the intricacies of Japanese joinery and an aspiration to learn more about this craft resulted in the use of a slightly adapted Sage-Kama (wedged through half dovetail) as the main joint used throughout the chair. Given the generous time period assigned for the construction, the decision was made to make the actual chair instead of a scale model. Maple wood was used for the main components of the chair, whilst a slightly softer cherry wood was used for the wedges, enabling the joints to function without the use of any adhesive. Both the seat and backrest comprise of simple canvas panels which are slid onto the timber frame, ensuring a comfortable seated position due to the material’s malleable nature.

9’ hollow noserider

Over the course of many weekends in 2017, I designed and built a hollow wooden surfboard for my own personal use. Being intrigued by the art of longboarding, and noseriding in particular, a classic 9 foot noserider with little rocker and rounded rails at the tail became the objective. The frame, deck and bottom are constructed from 4 mm mahogany triplex, whereas the rails, accentuated by narrow steambent ash slats, are shaped from solid red cedar.

05.Oregon pine cupboard

a wall covering storage cupboard for a family

A generous 60 cm deep under-stair storage cabinet was made from 18 mm birch plywood. The whole piece was subsequently clad with frames and doors made with solid oregon pine profiles to form a continuous plane in the space. 

06.Surfboard 02

5’11” flat nosed twin fin
2018, personal work






Following the succes of the 9’ noserider, I set out to build another hollow surfboard. This time using only quarter sawn solid 5 mm red cedar. The shape became a rather experimental flat-nosed and high-volume twin fin for the often small and mellow dutch beach-brakes.
